Soso, the language of coastal Guinea
Soso is spoken mainly in Guinea, where it is one of the national languages. It is also found in the Guinean diaspora and in neighbouring countries. Its proximity to Malinké and Dioula comes from a shared Mande heritage. The Soso are one of the country's major linguistic groups, alongside the Fulani and the Malinké.
Greetings in Soso
In Guinea, greetings are a social ritual. You ask about the person, their family and their health before getting to the point. Formulas vary from one region to another, and asking your interlocutor how they say it locally is always appreciated. It is also a great way to learn the living language.
Learning Soso without a teacher
Start with greetings and introductions. Listen to Guinean radio, songs and stories. Write down recurring words with their pronunciation, repeat out loud and ask a native speaker for corrections. General language apps rarely offer Soso, so participatory platforms and community practice make a real difference.
